KNOW MY STORY

The beginning

It could be said that FRANCISCO BARONA was born under the vines. He has the vineyard streaming through his veins. His father is a vine grower, and so were his grandfather and great-grandfather. Due to his passion for the vineyards and the wine, he travelled to Bordeaux, where he graduated in Oenology and Viticulture, obtaining the well known certificates of BTS VO and DNO.

After working in several world-renowned wineries in France, the USA and South Africa, in 2009 he returned as winemaker to the Ribera del Duero, the land where he was born and grew up among the vineyards.

In 2010, at the age of 25, convinced that he was in the best wine growing region in the world, he asked for his first bank loan and without a tremor in his heart he bought 5 old vines in 3 different villages, 5 GRAND CRUS that every year surprised him with how good they were, small vines with very low yields, whose grapes  were sold to the prestigious winery of Vega Sicilia.

In 2014 he produced his first red wine, very personal and with his own name FRANCISCO BARONA.

Terroir, unique vineyard
and traditional winemaking

FRANCISCO BARONA currently has 48 hectares of very old vines, some are over 100 years old and all have been recovered by him.

Small dry-farmed goblet-trained vineyards in the municipalities of Roa, La Horra, Anguix, La Aguilera and Boada de Roa.

Tinto Fino Vines coexisting in harmony with Garnachas, Valencianas, Albillos and Jaenes.

The vineyard use their own natural defence systems to fight diseases, helping them when necessary with natural plant preparations such as valerian, garlic, wormwood, camomile, lavender, sage, horsetail, nettle and cinnamon

The soil is  kept under ground cover and not ploughed during autumn, winter and spring, which allows fertility for a longer period of time and improves plant nutrition.

During the summer the soil is ploughed to avoid losing humidity. The vines are worked with as much vegetation as possible.

Neither shoot pruning or thinning is carried out, which allows the bunches to ripen in the shade, achieving greater acidity and better balance in the wines.

In the month of August, coinciding with the veraison period, a selection of clusters is made, removing from the vine those that are late in ripening.

Francisco Barona’s wines are created in the vineyard. Therefore, the winemaking process is handcrafted, natural and very little intervention.

The harvest is conducted using 12kg baskets and variety selection. The reception in the vats is done through gravity.

Alcoholic fermentation starts naturally with grapes’ own yeasts. Neither acidity regulators nor other oenological products are used. During the time spent in vats, wines are only slightly treated, manually and once a day.

The malolactic fermentation is always carried out in new French oak barrels. The wine is oak aged in new French oak barrels for 12 to 20 months, depending on the vintage.

Wines are always bottled without fining or filtering.

“I dreamt about it
and it became real”

THE WINERY

In 2021 Francisco Barona builds his own winery designed entirely by him, it is a sustainable, efficient and fully integrated building in the landscape.

The respect for the raw material is maximum, making wines with whole grapes and using gravity during the whole process, resulting in wines of high expressivity and complexity.

The ageing in barrel takes place underground at a depth of 8m, where the wines have the best conditions of temperature and humidity.
